About periodontal disease in Norwalk, CT

The Scary Truth about Gum Disease

Periodontal disease is a progressive bacterial infection in your mouth that affects the soft tissue and bone, but can also spread to infect other parts of your body, worsening other serious health conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Gum disease has been linked to increasing your risk of a heart attack, stroke and some forms of cancer. It is important to learn more about spotting signs of periodontal disease to catch and treat the infection as soon as possible before irreparable damage is caused.

Stages of Gum Disease

  • Gum Disease StagesGingivitis — Gums are red and puffy due to plaque build-up. This stage can still be reversed with proper brushing to remove the irritants from your gums.
  • Periodontitis — If gingivitis is left untreated, gum disease will advance. The fibers and bone supporting your teeth are irreversibly damaged at this stage. ‘Pockets’ have formed around your teeth collecting more bacteria. You must see Dr. Selma Kaplan immediately to stop further damage.
  • Advanced Periodontitis — Bacteria has spread, pockets are deeper, and the tissue and bone are even further destroyed. Teeth may be loose and at this point, you must see Dr. Kaplan to save your teeth.
